Accelerating Growth and Traceability: aBi Development’s Role in Uganda’s Coffee Farmer Registration Initiative

In efforts to enhance the traceability and sustainability of Uganda’s coffee industry, aBi Development has collaborated with various key institutions to facilitate the registration of coffee farmers across the country. This initiative, led by the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), marks a significant step toward improving coffee farming practices, meeting international compliance standards, and enhancing the livelihoods of farmers who form the backbone of Uganda’s coffee sector.

With a focus on sustainable agribusiness, aBi Development has championed the coffee agricultural sector by supporting impactful initiatives that align with Uganda’s green growth strategy. The coffee farmer registration drive, supported by aBi Development, reflects this commitment and serves as a foundation for compliance with the European Union’s anti Deforestation Regulations (EUDR), a policy designed to ensure sustainable sourcing practices. The registration will ultimately equip farmers with greater market access and help Uganda’s coffee industry secure its place in global value chains.

Driving Traceability with Key Partnerships

Pula Advisors, an agricultural insurance and technology company that designs and delivers innovative agricultural insurance and digital products to help smallholder farmers pioneer in digital farmer outreach and data-driven solutions, has undertaken the actual registration of the farmers.

Supporting this initiative is the EUDR Implementation Unit, made up of Café Africa and the International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA) Uganda Chapter. Both organisations bring critical expertise to the initiative, focusing on ensuring the registration is aligned with EUDR guidelines and that farmers receive the necessary resources to maintain sustainable practices. Café Africa brings in-depth experience in coffee sector development, while IWCA Uganda provides a focus on gender inclusivity, empowering female farmers and reinforcing the vital role of women in Uganda’s coffee production landscape.

Empowering Farmers and Elevating Uganda’s Coffee Sector

The coffee registration initiative is expected to have far-reaching impacts on Uganda’s coffee sector. It enables a structured approach to data collection, providing valuable insights into the sector that will help inform policy decisions, enhance the quality of coffee production, and drive sustainable farming practices. Importantly, the initiative also positions Uganda to meet the stringent sourcing and environmental standards required by international markets, notably the European Union, a key destination for Ugandan coffee exports.

For coffee farmers, registration serves as an essential step toward formalisation, giving them access to resources, potential credit facilities, and knowledge on sustainable agronomic practices. By integrating smallholder farmers into the formal supply chain, this initiative also lays the groundwork for improved income stability and resilience against market fluctuations, directly benefiting the livelihoods of registered farmers and their communities.

Ensuring Sustainable Compliance with EUDR Standards

The European Union anti Deforestation Regulations (EUDR) necessitate that coffee imported into the EU be sustainably sourced, with traceability to origin. This regulation is part of the EU’s broader agenda to address environmental concerns, promote sustainability, and prevent deforestation. For Uganda’s coffee industry, aligning with these regulations is paramount, and the registration of coffee farmers establishes a transparent and reliable system that ensures compliance with these international standards.

aBi Development’s involvement is integral to this initiative’s success, as it provides the resources and support needed to navigate the complexities of EUDR compliance. By collaborating with UCDA, Pula Advisors, Café Africa, and IWCA Uganda, aBi Development is setting up Uganda’s coffee sector for long-term resilience and global competitiveness, ensuring that coffee farmers can continue to participate in high-value international markets.
