Area Yield Index insurance
(AYII)
As climate change accelerates, smallholder farmers across Africa face increasing threats to their livelihoods. Droughts, floods, pests, and erratic weather patterns are becoming more frequent and more severe, yet few farmers have access to financial tools that protect them against these risks.
What Is Pula’s AYII Solution?
Pula’ s Area Yield Index Insurance compares actual yields at the end of the season to a pre-set historical average for a given Agro-Ecological Zone (AEZ). When yields fall below this benchmark due to drought, floods, pests, or other climate shocks, affected farmers automatically receive payouts.
How it Works
Product Design & Agro-Zoning
We design insurance products tailored to local farming systems and climate realities. Using satellite, rainfall, and yield data, we divide regions into Agro-Ecological Zones (AEZs), each with a defined historical yield average that forms the payout benchmark.

Farmer Registration & Education
We launch education campaigns during registration season to ensure farmers understand their insurance coverage, benefits, and how payouts are triggered. Our Mavuno registration app is mobile-friendly and built to scale across millions of farmers.

Yield and Loss Assessment
At harvest, we conduct Crop Cut Experiments (CCEs), a standardized, scientific method for measuring actual yields on sampled farmer plots within each Agro-Ecological Zone. Trained field agents harvest a representative portion of a farmer’s field, measure the output, and use that data to estimate average yields across the zone. This yield data is then compared against the pre-agreed yield threshold defined in the insurance policy.

Payout Calculation & Reporting
If actual yields fall below the pre-defined threshold, farmers receive insurance payouts. All results are verified by our actuaries and shared through transparent reporting to stakeholders, ensuring trust and accountability.

Key Benefits
Reliable, Transparent Payouts
Based on field-verified Crop Cut Experiments (CCEs), AYII ensures objective and trusted claim assessments, reducing disputes and building farmer confidence.
Affordable and Scalable
By insuring entire Agro-Ecological Zones, AYII reduces administrative costs and enables cost-effective protection for millions of farmers across wide geographies.
Empower Farmers to be Resilient Against Climate Shocks
Covers multiple climate-related risks supporting farmers recover, reinvest, and maintain productivity even after poor seasons.
Strengthens Food Security and Gender-inclusive Economic Development
By stabilizing farmer income and production, AYII contributes to broader goals of national food security and with over 40% of Pula’s benefic being women, helping bridge gender gaps in agricultural finance
